How do u get people interested in the news, even if they don’t follow it every day? VRT NWS found its answer in a daily news puzzle, and RMDY helped build it into the VRT NWS app.
RMDY x VRT NWS
The challenge
VRT NWS wanted an easy, accessible way to bring the news closer to people. Not another long read, but a short, playful moment that sparks curiosity about the day’s events.
The bar was high. The puzzle had to feel like a natural part of the existing app, and everyone had to be able to play, including people who are blind or partially sighted.
The approach
RMDY knows this product inside out. Joris, Mobile Developer at RMDY, has been part of the VRT NWS product team for seven years. Together with his colleagues at VRT, he developed the bulk of the puzzle in Flutter.
How the VRT NWS Puzzel works:
- A new puzzle every afternoon. Players answer seven to ten questions on the day’s news, and each correct answer helps reveal a hidden word.
- Every question links to its article, so players can dig into the story behind each answer.
- Easy to find, via a banner on the home screen or the app’s search function.
- Accessible from day one. Every row is fully described for screen readers, with its number, its length and its question. Inclusion wasn’t an afterthought. It was the starting point.
AI, checked by the newsroom
The questions are drafted with the help of artificial intelligence and then checked by the VRT NWS editorial team. New technology, backed by journalistic quality.
The result
VRT NWS has been trialling the Puzzel in its app since 1 October 2026. It gives users a daily, playful moment with the news, whether they read it every day or only now and then. Answer every question correctly and you could win a VRT NWS mug.
